How and Why?
A very long time ago, not in a far away galaxy, though it feels like that – I was primary carer for my wife, Samantha. She proved to be an enigma to modern medicine. Many learned medics had concluded her symptoms were “all in her mind”. Although this did little to help her, nor by osmosis, me.
Despite some of the best most talented minds in Wales, she succumbed to her condition on the 24th September 2016. A time where my own grasp on reality was diminishing. As a theraputic tool and in the air of “tongue in cheek” it was suggested I write the adventures of the “galloping vicar”. A reference to my alter profession as a Christian preacher. Not one to shrug the opportunity to express my both my wit, and love of writing, I chose the more descriptive “The Latest Supper”; a way to share what we shared as meals the previous evening.
If you are unfortunate to witness someone close, I mean really close, fade away like a burned out candle, then you hunger not for food, but the meal… the time together. Celebrating our wedding anniversary just over month before she passed; we shared a feast of cheese toasted sandwiches whilst lying together on our bed, watching TV and holding hands.
Finding it impossible to fill the the horrible hours: the hours of the day that make you ponder and grieve to an unimaginable level. For me the evenings was that time. The time I would hastily leave the day job and travel to whichever hospital she was at. By 9pm I would be home, sorting the domestics and feeding myself before starting the day again.
Although, stressful, physically demanding, and chaotic, nothing, but nothing, prepares you for the day you stop. The day when the need ends.
As a way of coping I started to invite friends around and cook, or visit them or just go out for dinner. Just occupying those 3 hours every day.
With time the writing increased so did my culinary skills. If surgeons and undertakers bury their mistakes, well, I ate mine. For the record I am not Hannibal Lector.
That is how this blog came about. Somewhere I could put down my thoughts. Sometimes it’s about life and spirituality, other times about food, and back in the day when I had mobility, my adventures with my cameras.
Fast forward 9 years and I am pleased to say “I’m still here!” There’s a song that is dear to many people in Wales that tells the story of a long forgotten Prince who fought the Romans. It’s called “Yma o Hyd” – (still here) & it is anthem for both rugby and soccer fans. Little did I think it would become my mantra. A lot of kind and respectful people helped me find the end of that tunnel. Meeting a lady 14 months on did help enormously. Five years ago in the middle of the pan-demic we wed. Something I have always relied upon is my faith. Often I am told I am lucky. I always retort with “blessed – twice!”
You see the difference between faith and belief is like the difference between a chapelgoer and a disciple, ones actions speak for you. Hence most chapelgoers need to hear the Word, whilst the good are out doing just that.

Whether spiritual or philosophical insight, sustenance or the current muse of his gaze; with time the blog became much more.
An award winning scriptwriter, designer, and filmmaker, Andrew spent almost a decade at the landmark Swansea Sound ILR becoming head of Religious Programming in 1997.
Returning to the digital airwaves in 2021, “Body & Soul” a weekly podcast from the heart of Burry Port, South Wales. A light mix of cookery advice, homilies & interviews. Available on the Podbean platform, has nurtured an audience in 24 territories, excluding the United Kingdom.
Sharing his skills as a baker, he instigated “Brakes2Cakes”. A means of sharing with and recognising local heroes, with a sweet treat delivery whilst out exercising.
